Cobalt Blue Metallic

Cobalt Blue Metallic is a light metallic blue Porsche paint that became widely used during the 1990s. Today, within Porsche’s Paint To Sample (PTS) program, it is officially listed as 944 Cobalt Blue Metallic, a designation used to clearly differentiate it from another paint with the same name.

It's a bright, cool-toned blue with fine metallic flake. In direct light, the paint produces a bright, reflective shine while in softer light it appears slightly deeper. A subtle violet undertone can be observed in certain conditions, contributing to the colour’s distinctive character.

The name “Cobalt Blue” is derived from the element cobalt, which has historically been used in the production of blue pigments. The association reflects the color’s saturated and distinctive blue character rather than any literal material connection.

The clarification in naming is important because Audi also uses a color called Cobalt Blue Metallic, which was made available on the Cayenne as a PTS option in 2023. Two paints with the same name would obviously lead to a lot of confusion so Porsche has identified both with a new name with Audi’s version being named 89 Cobalt Blue Metallic.
