Ferrari introduces bespoke “Yoonseul” transitional paint on one-off 12Cilindri

Ferrari has revealed a one-off Tailor Made 12Cilindri created as a creative and technical showcase for the brand’s highest personalisation programme. While the project includes contributions from several artists and designers, the true centrepiece for us is the car’s newly developed bespoke paint finish: a complex transitional color called Yoonseul.

A new bespoke color: Yoonseul

Developed exclusively for this vehicle, Yoonseul is a multi-layer finish with pronounced color travel. Depending on light and viewing angle, it transitions between green, violet and blue, with a depth that goes beyond traditional metallic or pearl effects.

The inspiration comes from Korean culture: the muted green tones of traditional celadon ceramics combined with the shimmering effect of light reflecting on water, known in Korean as “Yoonseul”. In practice, the paint behaves exactly as collectors expect from a modern high-end bespoke finish: subdued and elegant in low light, yet highly expressive under direct sunlight.

Paint used as a design tool

Ferrari went further than applying a single bespoke color. A second visual layer was created using a darker variation of the same Yoonseul paint, applied across the bodywork to form a subtle graphic rather than introducing an additional color.

This graphic is based on the sound waveform of Ferrari’s naturally aspirated V12 engine, developed by the artist duo GRAYCODE and jiiiiin. Crucially, this is not a decal or wrap effect, it is achieved through controlled application of paint itself, meaning the design has real depth and is embedded into the finish.

It is a rare example of a manufacturer using bespoke paint not merely as decoration, but as an integral design medium.

What this says about Ferrari’s direction

While the wider project explores materials, craft and artistic expression, the exterior finish remains the most defining element of the car. The fact that Ferrari developed an entirely new color family for a single vehicle underlines how central paint has become within modern ultra-high-end specification cars.

It also reflects a broader shift in Ferrari’s approach. Where the brand once strongly prioritized heritage colors and traditional palettes, recent projects increasingly embrace experimental, expressive and unconventional finishes. Paint is no longer treated as a final configuration choice, but as a core part of the car’s identity and storytelling.
