Black was one of two no-cost standard paint options on the 918 Spyder, the other being Pure White. It's also one of two black colors available from the standard range, this being a non-metallic and the other option, Basalt Black, being a metallic black paint.
As for the popularity, it's actually quite close between the two blacks with 59 Black cars made and only 5 more for Basalt Black.
