Sunstone Metallic is a BMW Individual paint with a distinctive champagne-like appearance, combining warm silver-gray, beige and bronze tones. Its character changes noticeably with the lighting: in the shade, it can appear as a muted silver-gray or metallic beige, while direct sunlight brings out a stronger golden and bronze glow. The metallic particles give the finish depth and allow the color to shift between these warmer and cooler tones.
The color was available on the third-generation BMW X3 from its introduction in 2017 and was also offered on models including the X3 M, X4 and, for a period, the X5 (G05). Sunstone Metallic was primarily associated with BMW's larger X models, providing an alternative to the more conventional silver and gray finishes in the range.
The color also had an unusual ordering restriction in its early years. Reports from BMW owners indicate that Sunstone Metallic could not be combined with the Driving Assistance Plus package on certain model and market configurations, reportedly due to concerns about interference with the assistance systems' sensors. It was therefore offered as a special-order paint, making it a relatively uncommon choice in the BMW range.
Sunstone Metallic was later phased out around the 2021 model year.
