Malachite Green Dark vs Dark Emerald

Alessandro Craeye

Two Individual dark green M Tourings, Malachite Green Dark on the M3 Touring and Dark Emerald on the M5 Touring.

Seen here under overcast conditions (and covered in road grime), both paints can appear fairly similar from certain angles at first glance but they differ noticeably in tone and character. Dark Emerald Metallic, originally a Rolls-Royce color later adopted by BMW Individual, is a near-black green with a vibrant green tone that only fully reveals itself under direct light. It’s a rather subtle and understated color, leaning closer to Oxford Green but with an even darker finish.

Malachite Green Dark, on the other hand, carries a more pronounced metallic structure. Compared to the standard Malachite Green, it replaces the warmer gold flake with a cooler blue tone, giving it a deeper and more unique tone. Under certain lighting, it shifts from a muted forest green to a darker teal-like shade, offering more visible contrast than Dark Emerald. In these conditions however the dark blue undertone is almost not noticeable.

Two unique interpretations of dark green on two of the most popular performance estate cars at the moment, can't go wrong with either one of the two if you ask us. Would love to see them side by side again under sunny conditions.
