The Mk7.5 Golf R is the facelifted version of Volkswagen’s range-topping Golf performance model, introduced in late 2017 for the 2018 model year. It retained the same 2.0-litre turbocharged EA888 inline-four from the pre-facelift Mk7 but received a slight power bump in certain markets—up to 310 PS (306 hp) in Europe (later reduced to 300 PS due to emissions regulations), while North America kept the 288 hp rating. Power is sent to all four wheels through VW’s 4Motion all-wheel-drive system via either a 6-speed manual or 7-speed DSG dual-clutch gearbox.
Visually, the Mk7.5 is distinguished by sharper LED headlights and taillights, revised bumpers, and new wheel designs. Inside, it gained updated infotainment options, including the Digital Cockpit display and larger touchscreens.
The Spektrum Program
For the North American market, Volkswagen launched the Spektrum Program in 2018, allowing Golf R buyers to order the car in one of 40 special colors from VW’s past. These ranged from subtle historical shades like Viper Green Metallic and Mars Red to bold modern tones such as Ginster Yellow and Caribbean Green. Each Spektrum color came with a production premium and extended lead time, making these cars particularly rare and collectible today.
Production of the Mk7.5 Golf R ran until 2020, when it was replaced by the Mk8 generation. Today, it remains sought after for its blend of everyday usability, discreet looks, and potent all-weather performance.
